We spent 4 incredible days in Bergen, ‘The Gateway to Norway’s Fjords’. We then headed right into the core of fjord land – Balestrand. Balestrand is a picturesque town that doesn’t often make it to tourist itineraries, but is a perfect place for a retirement trip of a lifetime. This is perhaps how it maintains its charm and tranquility. Balestrand’s main attraction is its spectacular location. It is nestled along the main branch of the largest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord. It is one of the best places to enjoy Norway’s iconic landscapes in utter peace.
Yes, even during peak tourist season, Balestrand retains its tranquility and maintains its hidden gem status. To learn about its existence, you have to be ‘in the know’, because by looking at Google Maps alone (unless in satellite mode or zoomed in close) there is little indication of tourist attractions apart from a few hotels and supermarkets. But the small-town charm comes with a big perk of warm hospitality, and although you will hardly need more than a day to cover all the things to do in Balestrand, we stayed for two to take in the atmosphere at the right pace.

Why You Must Visit Balestrand, Norway
Charming Architecture
For a tiny town, Balestrand boasts a delightful mix of architecture, from traditional Norwegian wooden houses to charming Swiss style that was popular in Norway in the 19th century. Strolling through Balestrand’s streets is like stepping back in time, and the first place to start is the chalet-style Kviknes Hotel.
This beautiful building is a must-visit landmark. Located right on the Sognefjord and surrounded by mountains, this hotel, originally built in 1752, has been run by different generations of the Kviknes family since 1877. Made popular by hosting the summer visits of the German emperor, the hotel has retained its old-world charm and remains the most majestic building in town. If you don’t choose to stay at this historic hotel, make sure to pay it a visit anyway to admire the collection of artwork and antiques and enjoy a spectacular Norwegian buffet. Then, to dive into the history of Balestrand, visit St. Olaf’s Church, a neo-Gothic style church dating back to the 19th century, which was a project of the Kviknes family as well.

All You Can Eat Apples
If you visit Balestrand in the summer, the landscape will be dotted with apple trees. Adhering to the old adage, you should snack on one every day of your stay or…enjoy it in liquid form. And there is no better place to do that than by attending a Cider tasting at The Cider House. At this family-run organic orchard in Balestrand, not only do you get to learn about ancient Norwegian cider traditions, but also taste an array of local ciders accompanied by gorgeous dishes.
What makes it extra special is that Balestrand’s orchards, producing scrumptious fruit on the banks of the Sognefjord. This is the oldest fruit-growing region in Norway. This tasting is one of the most unique attractions in Norway that we’ve had the pleasure of participating in. It’s a full-bodied experience (pun intended) that comes with a view, entailing so much more than just a drink. We recommend booking this tour in advance as spots are limited. And in case you don’t drink alcohol, there are delicious apple juice alternatives.
Spectacular Fjord Views
And without further ado, the main reason we came to Balestrand – fjord views. The views you get from the fjord side positioned Balestrand are simply unbeatable! The town is situated right in the heart of the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord that stretches for over 126 miles inland from Bergen.
Balestrand is surrounded by majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, and emerald-green glacial water in the fjords. The scenery quite literally takes your breath away. During your stay, you will want to find as many ways to soak in the landscapes. Go for leisurely strolls along the waterfront or hike up to panoramic viewpoints.
But the best way to see Balestrand fjords is by taking a boat cruise. The Sognefjord’s grandeur should be enjoyed the very same way. To opt into this experience in Balestrand and prefer things at a slower pace, take a ferry-style boat cruise. This will take you from view point to view point and gets you up close and personal to the cliffs jutting out of glacial waters.
Outdoor Adventures
For adventure enthusiasts, Balestrand, Norway provides ample opportunities for exploration. From invigorating hikes and mountain biking to kayaking on the fjord, there is an abundance of outdoor activities to satisfy your wanderlust. Kayaking down the emerald fjord is a treat thanks to the calm waters. Taking a guided tour will guarantee visits to the best lookout points, plenty of interesting stories, and a fun history lesson.
To get epic views of the fjord from above, hike through the network of well-marked and color coded trails known as Kreklingen. If you are in the mood for an easy hike, where you can stop often to take in local flora and fauna and enjoy Balestrand views, take the nature trail that starts from Belehalli sports center to Sandstolen and Skasheim. For a more challenging experience take the route to Raudmelen, where the last leg from Burasi gets progressively steeper. But the fjord views at the end that look just like a painting are worth the effort. And in the summer, you get extra hours of daylight to enjoy them!
