Our Colombia Guatape vlog takes us on a private day tour to the Piedra del Penol. We also visit the town of Guatape, about two hours from Medellin. Jaime, our tour guide with @kachaycolombiatours, did a fantastic job and was knowledgeable about the area. We first visited a replica of the relocated town of El Penol before visiting the magnificent rock, El Penon de Guatape (it has several names). After climbing the 740 steps to the top to see some fantastic views, we had a wonderful lunch and did some sightseeing in the colorful town of Guatape, Colombia. This excursion is a must-day trip if you are visiting Medellin.
Best Medellin Colombia Day Trip | Guatape
Guatapé stands out as the best day trip from Medellín. It captivates visitors with its vibrant colors, pretty landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. A mere two-hour drive from Medellín is this charming town. It is renowned for its iconic El Peñol Rock, a colossal monolith offering panoramic views of the surrounding lakes and countryside from its summit. The city itself enchants with its colorful zocalos (decorative tiles) adorning the facades of buildings. Each one narrates a story or symbolizing local traditions. Visitors can meander through cobblestone streets, browse artisanal crafts, and indulge in local cuisine while soaking in the relaxed pace and authentic Colombian charm.
Whether you’re climbing El Peñol for breathtaking vistas, exploring the tranquil waters by boat, or capturing the vibrant essence of Guatapé’s streets, a day trip to this enchanting town encapsulates the diverse beauty and cultural richness that Medellín’s surroundings have to offer. It makes an unforgettable excursion for travelers seeking a blend of natural wonders and authentic experiences.

We spent a month in Medellin and enjoyed our time there. Every Sunday morning we would visit the Ciclovia in Poblado neighborhood. We enjoyed long walks and runs with the local residents. Check out the video here.
