OKLAHOMA
Our Oklahoma Travel Guide
Located in the South Central Region of the US, the state of Oklahoma is one of the top producers of crude oil, petroleum, and natural gas in the country. In the late 1800s, the settlers were given land to claim in the area; however, some people managed to get to these areas even before they were given access to the territories, as many were waiting outside the border to enter in their wagons. This earlier group of people were called the ‘Sooners,’ which gave Oklahoma its nickname, ‘the Sooner State.’ Read on to learn more about visiting this state.
First, a little history…
In 1541, Spanish explorers traveled to Oklahoma in search of cities made of gold. For some time, both France and Spain controlled parts of the region. Later, France acquired the land from Spain and sold it to the United States. Finally, in the 1830s, Native American tribes in the eastern parts of the country were forced to leave their homelands and settle in the region now known as Oklahoma.
Oklahoma was split into the Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory in 1890. However, despite the Native Indians applying for statehood as Sequoyah, Oklahoma was combined into a single state and joined the union in 1907.
