Cape Town, South Africa, is a stunning city known for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and rich history. Nestled between the iconic Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, it offers various activities and attractions that appeal to every type of traveler. We spent a month relaxing and enjoying this incredible town. Here’s an overview of ten of best things to do and see in Cape Town.

Explore Table Mountain

No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip to Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The flat-topped mountain provides stunning views of the city, the ocean, and the surrounding landscape.

Hiking Table Mountain

Adventurous visitors can hike one of the many trails leading to the summit, with the Platteklip Gorge trail being the most popular for its direct route to the top. Depending on fitness levels, the hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and offers spectacular views.

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway provides a scenic ride to the summit for those who prefer a more leisurely ascent. The cable car’s rotating floor allows passengers to take in the panoramic views as they ascend.

Table Mountain Activities

At the top, visitors can enjoy numerous walking trails, picnic spots, and the unique flora of the fynbos ecosystem. Sunset views from Table Mountain are exceptionally breathtaking, making it a popular place for photographers.

Visit the V&A Waterfront

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, often called the V&A Waterfront, is a bustling harbor area that combines shopping, dining, and entertainment with stunning views of Table Mountain, which make it one of the top Cape Town attractions.

Shopping and Dining

The waterfront features a mix of local and international shops, from boutiques to large retailers. We enjoyed a variety of restaurants and cafes offering everything from casual bites to fine dining, with many places serving fresh seafood. The prices, for such a popular and touristy areas, shocked us for how reasonable they were. We tried a different great restaurant nearly every evening.

V & A Attractions

Key attractions at the V&A Waterfront include the Two Oceans Aquarium, which showcases marine life from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and the Robben Island Museum, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Ferries to Robben Island depart from the waterfront, allowing visitors to explore this historic site.

Oranjezicht Market

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Cape Town is a bustling open-air market near the V&A Waterfront, offering a wide range of fresh, organic produce and artisanal foods. Every Saturday and Sunday, the market brings together local farmers, bakers, and food vendors, creating a vibrant atmosphere where visitors can shop for everything from farm-fresh vegetables and fruit to homemade bread, cheeses, and preserves. The market emphasizes sustainability, supporting small-scale local farmers and producers, and promoting organic, non-GMO, and ethically sourced goods.

In addition to fresh produce, the Oranjezicht Market is a popular spot for enjoying breakfast, brunch, or snacks. With various stalls offering international and local dishes, visitors can sample fresh juices, vegan treats, gourmet coffee, and traditional South African street food, all while enjoying the scenic backdrop of Table Mountain. The market is also a community gathering place, attracting locals and tourists who come to shop, socialize, and soak in the lively, eco-friendly atmosphere.

Discover the Cape Winelands

The Cape Winelands, located just a short drive from Cape Town, is a region known for its picturesque vineyards, world-class wines, and charming towns.

Nearby Wine Tours are also Cape Town Attractions

Popular towns in the region include Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek, each offering wine tastings at various wineries. Many vineyards provide guided tours that cover the winemaking process, and some even include food pairings with their wines.

Culinary Delights

The Winelands are famous not only for their wines but also for gourmet food experiences. Many wineries have award-winning restaurants where visitors can enjoy meals prepared with local ingredients while overlooking the vineyards. We had lunch at a local vineyard, Groot Constantia Wine Estate, will a local couple and had an amazing time.

The drive through the Winelands is stunning, with rolling hills and mountain backdrops. The Franschhoek Pass and Helshoogte Pass offer scenic routes perfect for leisurely drives.

Numerous hiking trails wind through the park, with paths leading to the Old Lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope. The hike to the lighthouse provides breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.

Explore the Bo-Kaap Neighborhood

The Bo-Kaap, known for its brightly colored houses and rich cultural heritage, is a must-visit neighborhood in Cape Town. Originally home to the Cape Malay community, the area is famous for its unique architecture and vibrant streets. Our hotel was located in this area and we walked through the colorful houses each day on our way to restaurants and exploring other areas of the city.

Bo-Kaap Museum

We explored the Bo-Kaap Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the Cape Malay community and provides insights into the residents’ traditions, cuisine, and lifestyle.

Walking Tours of Bo-Kaap

Walking tours through the Bo-Kaap offer a chance to learn about the neighborhood’s history and the significance of its architecture. Tour guides often share stories about the area’s cultural heritage and the people who live there.

Culinary Delights

Bo-Kaap is known for its culinary offerings, particularly Cape Malay cuisine. Visitors can try local dishes such as bunny chow and koeksisters at nearby restaurants or join a cooking class to learn how to make traditional dishes.

Hike Lion’s Head

Hiking Lion’s Head in Cape Town is a memory we will have forever. It is one of the most incredible hikes we’ve ever done with stunning panoramic views of the city, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic Ocean. The trail, while moderately challenging, is accessible to most hikers with a reasonable fitness level. The hike takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of terrains, including gravel paths, rocky sections, and a few areas where climbing metal ladders and using chains for support is necessary. The ascent is particularly scenic, with views that improve as you climb higher.

john at the top of Lion's head
One of our best hikes ever

The Summit of Lion’s Head

Reaching the summit of Lion’s Head offers a breathtaking 360-degree view, making it a popular spot for sunrise and sunset hikes. Many hikers bring a picnic and enjoy the incredible landscape from the top. The path is well-marked and offers alternatives in more difficult sections for those who prefer a less technical route. We took the route with the chains and ladders and thought it was great. The ladders were secure and we thought it was safe. Whether you’re an adventure-seeker or a casual hiker, Lion’s Head provides an unforgettable experience and an excellent opportunity to see Cape Town from a unique vantage point. It is no wonder this was one of our favorite Cape Town attractions.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town, is one of the most renowned botanical gardens in the world, celebrated for its beauty and diversity. Covering over 1,300 acres, the garden showcases South Africa’s unique flora, particularly the fynbos vegetation of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Visitors can explore beautifully landscaped pathways, admire a wide range of indigenous plants, and enjoy seasonal displays of proteas, cycads, and other native species. The Boomslang Canopy Walkway, a curved bridge above the treetops, offers stunning panoramic views of the gardens and Table Mountain, providing a highlight for visitors.

One of our favorite botanical gardens

Beyond its natural beauty, Kirstenbosch is also a cultural hub, frequently hosting outdoor concerts, art exhibitions, and family-friendly events, particularly during the summer months. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful retreat from the city, the gardens offer a tranquil environment perfect for picnics, leisurely walks, or simply soaking in the stunning surroundings. The combination of vibrant plant life, diverse bird species, and the backdrop of Table Mountain makes Kirstenbosch a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Cape Town. We also enjoyed a great lunch at MOYO Kirstenbosch, which is an African themed restaurant in the gardens.

Take the Ceres Railway

Taking the Ceres Rail in Cape Town is a unique way to experience the region’s scenic beauty and rich history. This restored steam train journey takes passengers from Cape Town through the picturesque Cape Winelands and into the Ceres Valley, passing vineyards, mountains, and charming small towns along the way. The nostalgic charm of the steam locomotive, combined with the stunning landscapes, makes for a memorable and leisurely experience. As the train meanders through the countryside, passengers can relax in vintage carriages, enjoy refreshments, and soak in the breathtaking views of South Africa’s natural beauty in one our favorite Cape Town attractions.

In addition to the scenic experience, the Ceres Rail also offers a glimpse into South Africa’s rail heritage. This makes it a delightful way to combine sightseeing with local food and drink. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing day out or a fun, immersive adventure, the Ceres Rail offers a charming and historic perspective on Cape Town’s countryside that can’t be missed.

Hello and thanks for following along with us. Not sure exactly what you are looking for. We loved Cape Town so much and thought the safari was fun as well. We later took a cruise and discovered Namibia. That is a place we would return to for sure. If you have some specific questions about the safari, Cape Town, etc, let us know. Also, we really enjoyed our visit to Victoria Falls and our stay at Pamarah Lodge.
      Happy journeys,
      John and Bev

  • We rolled into Gyeongju on a zippy high-speed train and realized that this place is like walking through a history book that forgot it was supposed to be boring. They call it Korea’s “museum without walls,” and we couldn’t agree more. Our favorite stop? The stunning Woljeonggyo Bridge — painted dragons above, river below, and us smack in the middle of this fabulous city wondering how we could rearrange our schedule for a longer stay. Our hearts were hitching a ride back to the 7th century, but unfortunately, the next train was scheduled to take us to the next amazing Korean city. We’ll be back, no doubt! We love it so!

  • One thing we learned in Seoul today is that by wearing our Retirement Travelers shirts and vlogging our adventures, we were no longer ordinary tourists. We were viral-worthy legends in the eyes of middle-school boys. At Gyeongbokgung Palace, we were admiring the royal rooftops when this fun group of kids spotted us and swarmed. Phones clicked, peace signs flew, and we soaked up our five minutes of fame. And to think—our kids back home just call us “cute old people” but clearly, in South Korea, we are one step away from debuting as the next K-pop duo. 🤣 #seoulkorea #seoul🇰🇷 #kpop #korea NEVER STOP ACTING LIKE A KID!!!
  • Hands down, our favorite thing at the Osaka World Expo 2025 was the Grand Ring—a jaw-dropping, 2-kilometer wooden skywalk that loops above the pavilions like a giant hula hoop. Not only does it hold the Guinness World Record for the largest wooden architectural structure, but it also came with one magical feature most of the pavilions lacked: no reservations required!!! We strolled around the wooden marvel like VIPs with zero lines and awesome views. #osaka #worldexpo #japan
  • We took one last wander through Kyoto’s bamboo forest today—along with what felt like the entire population of Earth. Still, the towering stalks and swaying hush made it feel like nature was trying its best to whisper over the crowd. As we get ready to leave Kyoto behind, we’re carrying some unforgettable moments with us and we look forward to adding some more along the way. #kyoto #japanlife #bambooforest
  • We’ve officially arrived in Kyoto, and guess who’s already winning at this whole cultural immersion thing. Our 7-year-old granddaughter. Jet lag? She laughed in its face. Chopsticks? She’s in training. Bowing politely? Basically, a local diplomat. And the outfit? A pink kimono and a matching fan that we bought her—she’s got more style than the rest of us combined. Meanwhile, we’re over here trying to decode the Japanese metro system like it’s an escape room… after a month of being spoiled by China’s luxury rail life. She’s thriving, we’re surviving—and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way! It is also good reminder to us to still see the world through the curiosity and innocence of a child. Evie, Thanks for joining us in Japan!!! #kyotojapan #kyoto #japan
  • In the heart of Shanghai’s futuristic skyline, we found ourselves living a dream—our lodging nestled high within the iconic Jin Mao Tower(Bldg on left). Each morning, we woke to a commanding view of the World Financial Center slicing through the sky, and just steps away stood the architectural marvel that is the Shanghai Tower—the third tallest building in the world. Our adventure reached thrilling new heights as we ascended to its summit, where the city sprawled beneath us like a living tapestry. It was more than just a stay; it was a front-row seat to one of the most awe-inspiring skylines on Earth. #shanghai #chinatrip #jinmaotower #shanghaitower #china
  • A visit to Beijing isn’t complete without a long walk on the Great Wall (Badaling section), which is now only a 30-minute train ride from Beijing North Railway Station. It is simply spectacular and a must visit. #greatwall #greatwallofchina #china
  • Bev stood in awe before the Army of Terracotta Warriors near Xi'an. Hidden for 2200 years, these ancient relics were only unearthed by a Chinese farmer in 1974. China's First Emperor Qin Shi Huang sought to defy mortality. He poured vast resources into constructing an underground empire, complete with palaces, armies, chariots, and stables. Spanning 21 square miles, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest burial ground on earth. #xian #xianchina #terracottawarriors #china #retirementtravel
  • The reason we stopped in Chengdu was pretty black and white………and very, very cute. 🐼
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is an incredible facility that houses over 200 Giant Pandas and Red Pandas. This photo is the most famous resident here. She is a cutie and a social media star in China, named HuaHua.

  • We are in Chongqing. This municipality in southwestern China is considered one of the largest cities in the world with over 30 million people. It is massive! It is nicknamed “The Mountain City” because of the many urban hills with unique transportation systems that adapt to the terrain. This is a vibrant place with lots of high-end shopping, a monorail that passes through a building, towering skyscrapers, and so many wonderful “Hot Pot” restaurants. #china #chongqing #lizibastation
  • Just zipping around China by train,
We think it’s much better than a plane.
A rail network so vast,
And speeds that are fast,
There is nary a thing to complain.

Several of you have asked how we are getting around in China? Well, the Chinese high-speed train system has quite simply BLOWN US AWAY!!! It is modern, affordable, fast, clean, efficient, convenient and has great service. There is a rapidly expanding network of 25,000 miles of high-speed rail lines, with numerous daily routes going about anywhere you would want to go. We have tried the 1st and 2nd class tickets, both of which are perfectly fine, but admit we love the over-the-top luxury of business class for affordable prices. We will be detailing more info about Chinese train travel in future videos, so stay tuned. John and Bev

  • Tianmen Mountain was our third incredible attraction near Zhangjiajie, China. The mountain can be accessed from the city by two different exhilarating aerial trams or a dangerous highway featuring 99 hairpin turns. Tianmen literally means “Heaven’s Gate” and the 999 stairs leading up to the opening are known as the Stairway to Heaven. Climbing this stairway was another bucket list experience for us, so we took our time on the steep steps and just savored every moment. After passing through the gate, a long series of escalators take you up through the inside of the mountain to the top, where they have a glass-bottomed walkway hugging a cliffside and many great views of the area.

We’ve officially arrived in Kyoto, and guess who’s already winning at this whole cultural immersion thing.

The reason we stopped in Chengdu was pretty black and white………and very, very cute. 🐼
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is an incredible facility that houses over 200 Giant Pandas and Red Pandas. This photo is the most famous resident here. She is a cutie and a social media star in China, named HuaHua.

We are in Chongqing.

Just zipping around China by train,
We think it’s much better than a plane.

Tianmen Mountain was our third incredible attraction near Zhangjiajie, China.
