The Merry Cemetery is an excellent choice if you are looking for what to do in Romania. It is about a 3-hour drive from Cluj Napoca in northern Romania, near the border of Ukraine. We think it is one of the ten best places to visit in Romania in the town of Sapanta, Romania.

Retirement is a great time to travel to new places and explore areas that you didn’t have time to see during your working years. We spent a month in Romania and explored many unique places like this amazing cemetery.

The Merry Cemetery of Romania

We had heard about this cemetery from Atlas Obscura, which highlights interesting and unusual places around the world. Some might consider it morbid or dark humor, but it is a celebration of life done creatively and lovingly. It was one of the best cemeteries and is often called as the happiest cemetery in the world. Cimitirul Vessel, as the Merry Cemetery is known in Romania, is a place for your bucket list. It made us stop and think, If we could have our lives depicted by a painting, what would it be?
