First, a little history…
The name ‘Colorado’ comes from a Spanish word that means ‘turned red.’ The name originated from a Spanish description of the reddish deposits in the Colorado River. In 1876, Colorado became the 38th state to enter the Union. It was given the nickname ‘the Centennial State because it became a state one century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
For thousands of years, the state has been inhabited by Native American tribes. The Native American influence can still be found in the region in folktales, music, dances, and food.

Major Colorado Attractions
Dinosaur National Monument
The monument is located in northwest Colorado. It is not only famous for its archeological aspects, but also recreational activities, including driving tours, hiking, fishing, rafting, and camping. Inside the monument, you will find petroglyphs and dinosaur remains embedded in the rock walls, providing insight into the cultures and people that existed centuries ago.
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve
Colorado has the tallest sand dunes in North America. The popular 750-foot Star Dune stands against the backdrop of mountains which creates a stunning view. People like to climb or slide on the dunes and test their boarding skills. Along the base of the dunes, you will find Medano Creek, which provides a welcoming refuge in the hot desert weather.
Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness
Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness area is famous for its lakes, meadows, forests, and mountains, which are 14,000 feet tall. Most of the visitors are attracted to this spot because of the available recreational activities. You will find 175 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Tourists can also go fishing in the lakes, streams, and rivers, a popular summer activity. You can also camp in this serene wilderness with the right camping equipment.
Mesa Verde National Park
If you have not seen cliff dwellings before, you must visit Mesa Verde National Park! Situated near the towns of Mancos and Cortez, the area was inhabited by the Ancestral Pueblo between 600 AD and 1300 AD. You will find thousands of archeological sites inside the park, many accessible through a road. However, if you want to explore the place thoroughly, you can take the hiking trails that will lead you to some unique sites, including petroglyphs.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the U.S. The park’s meadows, mountain peaks, forests, and wildlife make it one of the best places to visit if you want to explore nature in its purest form. Visitors often find elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and other animals roaming around the park.
