Sylva, North Carolina: Visit Jackson County
Our next retirement travel adventure took us down the Tuckasegee River to Sylva, North Carolina. It felt like we were in one of the best small towns in America. The beautiful Jackson County North Carolina Courthouse overlooks the town, great restaurants, breweries, and outdoor activities in the area. It is no wonder this small town became one of our favorites. Our host for the visit was the town’s Chief of Police. All we can say is southern hospitality at its very best! We had such a great time in Sylva, North Carolina and a visit to Jackson County is a must.
We stayed in a beautiful mountain cabin near town during our visit to Jackson County and got to experience a fun rafting trip on the Tuckasegee River with the Dillsboro River Company. The 5.5-mile trip was relaxing and scenic and even took us by the train wreck scene from the hit 1993 movie, The Fugitive. So if you find yourself in the North Carolina mountains, give Sylva, NC some time and enjoy all this beautiful small town has to offer. You won’t regret it.

There are so many beautiful areas and things to do in this part of the country. So whether you are floating the Tuckasegee River or hiking in the mountains, be sure to add this area to your itinerary. Just to the north of Sylva, NC is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We have spent many days exploring the park and spending time in the Gatlinburg area, so be sure to check out that video. In this video, we climbed a great trail called Chimney Tops, went to the very top of the park at Clingman’s Dome, and then spent time exploring the attractions in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
