7 Best Places to Visit in West Virginia

Last Updated: March 11, 2023

West Virginia is full of incredible places to visit and the home state of John. So if you ever run into us on the road and bring up West Virginia, you’re sure to walk away with at least a little Mountaineer spirit in your heart!

West Virginia became the 35th state of the United States in 1863 when it broke away from Virginia to form an independent state government. It has a rich history of determined and innovative people.

The best way to experience the state is in the great outdoors. It’s magnificent, and you can’t go wrong by planning a road trip through this state. It is especially popular with motorcyclists who love the curvy roads, beautiful mountain passes, and the changing leaves in the fall, but even if you’ve never hopped on a bike, a car trip will suffice and be just as glorious.

We have compiled our favorite spots to visit. Let us know if you have a favorite that needs to be added to the list. We might just add it! The truth is, there’s something for everyone in West Virginia, so take advantage of its natural beauty and diverse attractions!

Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater Falls State Park is located in Tucker County and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. The park is named after the cascading waterfall on the Blackwater River, one of the most photographed waterfalls in the eastern United States. The park is also renowned for its spectacular views, lush forests, and forest wildlife.

The park’s history dates back to the early 1900s when the West Virginia Legislature authorized the land purchase in 1926. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was then tasked with developing the park, and they began construction on the first facilities in 1933. The CCC built cabins, roads, trails, and a lodge, which was completed in 1937. The lodge is still in use today and is a popular spot for visitors to stay. Blackwater Falls State Park continues to be a popular destination for outdoor recreation and is an important part of West Virginia’s history.

Seneca Rocks

Seneca Rocks is a stunning rock formation located in northeastern West Virginia and one of the best places to visit. It is one of the world’s most iconic and recognizable rock climbing locations. The formation is part of the larger Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, established in 1965.

The rocks were formed approximately 300 million years ago when the ancient Iapetus Ocean was pushed and folded into the Appalachian Mountains. The rocks are made of Tuscarora quartzite, a sedimentary rock that is very hard and resistant to erosion. Seneca Rocks have been a popular destination for experienced climbers since the 1950s, and the formation has become a mecca for rock climbing enthusiasts worldwide. In addition to the technical climbing routes, Seneca Rocks offers several beginner and intermediate trails, making it an excellent spot for climbers of all levels.

New River Gorge National Park

The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is a beautiful and historic park. It was established in 2020 and is named after the New River, one of the oldest rivers in the world. It is currently the newest National Park in the country. The park offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy its rich history, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife. It is home to over 50,000 acres of rugged wilderness, including the New River Gorge Bridge, the longest single steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere.

Babcock State Park

Babcock State Park is located in the New River Gorge area of West Virginia. It is one of the most popular state parks in West Virginia. The park was named after the Babcock family, which owned the land that eventually became the park. It was established in 1949 when the Babcock’s donated 4,127 acres of land to the state of West Virginia.

The park offers miles of trails, a variety of outdoor activities, and breathtaking views of the New River Gorge. The park is also home to several historical and cultural sites, such as the Glade Creek Grist Mill. In addition, visitors to the park can enjoy camping, fishing, boating, swimming, horseback riding, and more.

The Greenbriar Hotel has a long and illustrious history. Built in 1913, the hotel was originally a hunting lodge for wealthy guests. It was later expanded to include an 18-hole golf course, a luxurious spa, and a beautiful ballroom. It has been visited by many famous people throughout its history, including presidents and celebrities. The Greenbriar Hotel has also been featured in several films, television shows, and books, making it one of the most recognizable and historic hotels in the United States.

We often stop by just to have lunch in the beautiful restaurant and walk through the lobby. If you’re in the area, you can do this as well. At Christmas, they go all out to decorate, but it’s truly lovely any time of the year and one of the best places in West Virginia.

We hope you enjoy your trip to West Virginia! There is so much to see and do!
