First, a little history…

The British, French, and Spanish occupied different parts of Alabama at varying points in history until 1819 when it was officially recognized as one of the United States of America. It played a pivotal role in the American Civil War as its capital, Montgomery, was the first capital of the Confederacy. It was at the center of the American Civil Rights Movement and hosted several historical events like the Montgomery Bus Boycott in the mid-20th century. The state’s economy is now fueled by agriculture and jobs in aerospace, auto production, and the service sector.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is a window into the history of Alabama.
