Major Attractions

South Carolina Plantation Gardens

The state has many plantations, and while the gardens and homes are magnificent, one can learn so much about the abuses of slavery that helped build them. Rather than celebrate this, we used it as an opportunity to learn and reflect. One of the earliest plantations is the Magnolia Plantation which is a part of one of America’s oldest publicly accessed gardens. Boone Hall Plantation is another one of the oldest plantations in the country and is known for its scenic avenue of oaks. It gives its visitors a peek into 18th-century craftsmanship through the interiors of Drayton Hall.

Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island is an excellent option for those looking for a less crowded beach and makes for a perfect place to kick back and relax under the clear blue sky. It is not fancy like Myrtle Beach but offers a range of exciting and fun activities such as shopping, restaurants, golf courses, and glistening wide sandy beaches. Hilton Head Island also has bicycling trails suitable for kids and less-experienced people. On a lucky day, tourists can also see dolphins playing along the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway. Nearby is the Pinckney Island National Wildlife refuge, where visitors can glimpse rare and common marine life and birds.

South Carolina State Museum

South Carolina State Museum is the state’s largest museum. It allows its visitors to learn about South Carolina’s natural history, art, culture, science, and technology through the various exhibits displayed across the four floors of the building. In addition, the museum’s 4-D interactive science theater, a planetarium, and educational exhibits make it an exciting attraction for young visitors.

Some other notable places and attractions:

Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, Columbia
Caesars Head State Park
Columbia Museum of Art
Congaree National Park, Hopkins
