San Juan Islands, Washington – Best place for shrimping and crabbing
Our next retirement travel stop was the beautiful San Juan Islands, Washington. A retired Alcoa friend took us crabbing and shrimping in the islands, after a morning of clam digging near Bellingham, Washington. Shrimping and crabbing were fun activities, while the raw beauty of these 97 islands is breathtaking. We rode in the boat for hours through the sparsely populated, forested, and the hilly islands. Finally, our friend dropped us off at Matia Island State Park for a beautiful one-hour hike of solitude and beauty. Having an island all to yourself is a great experience. Washington State and Pacific Northwest have been wonderful to visit this summer. We caught 15 Dungeness crabs, about 50 shrimp, and enough clams for a great appetizer. We can’t thank our friend Barry enough for his kind hospitality and generosity in spending an entire day touring the San Juan Islands with us. Thanks, Barry.
If you are visiting this area, be sure to make a visit over to North Cascades National Park. It is short and scenic drive from this area.
